“Build your reputation as an award-winning business”

The Client Challenge

Understanding and completing any award submission process is time-consuming and frequently complex. Hummingbird needed a solution that took care of collating and creating entries while minimising disruption of the day-to-day functioning of the Hummingbird team

The Coda Solution

The complete outsourced management of the entry writing process, from information gathering to entry creation and submission. This not only ensured crafting an insightful entry that illuminated Hummingbird’s suitability for an award, but also took full responsibility for managing the process.

The brief

Hummingbird produces innovative gas sensing technology for the world’s leading industrial and healthcare device manufacturers.

To gain recognition for this technological leadership, Hummingbird approached Coda to create entries for the prestigious Queen’s (King’s) Award for Enterprise. The UK’s highest accolade for business success.

Entry is dependent on submitting a detailed, two-part entry, a process that takes several months to complete – and for which competition is fierce.

A process for success

1. Preparation is everything Preparation is everything – and a short research phase enabled Coda to understand the brief, set project management goals, build relationships with key stakeholder contributors, and to ensure strict eligibility criteria were met.

2. A winning entry depends on coherent storytelling, as much as providing information, and our dedicated PR team used our experienced editorial approachto create a clear and coherent entry for the judging panel.

3. The outsourcing of project management and delivery to Coda was as critical as copywriting. Our independent, proactive client approach coordinated the entire process of creation and delivery, leaving the Hummingbird team to concentrate on their day jobs.

4. Coda’s outside view of Hummingbird, and our experience and understanding of the business, enabled us to reveal stand-out insights of the Hummingbird story, ensuring a compelling entry that communicated all the team’s achievements.

5. Entry submitted! Once the entry was drafted, Coda oversaw a comprehensive review with all stakeholders before submitting the entry – and awaited the outcome.

Measurable results

Success! Hummingbird received Queen’s Awards for Enterprise in 2016 and 2022

  • 2016 Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category, for design and manufacture of Hummingbird Paramagnetic oxygen sensors.

  • 2022 Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the International Trade category.

Now twice-awards winners, Hummingbird has enhanced its profile and reputation among customers and prospects worldwide. Hummingbird’s market-leading position as an innovative manufacturer of sensing technology has been reinforced, and the royal association increased buyer confidence with prospects previously unfamiliar to the brand.

“We were extremely proud to be recognized for our continued innovation by winning the Queen’s Award. Coda really took the time to understand what we do and presented the best possible case to the award judges.”

  • Next Steps

Following announcement of the awards, Coda managed PR and social plan to get the benefit from the award and associated events, which included attendance at a reception at Buckingham Palace for the winners, hosted by senior royals in 2016 and 2202.

As Hummingbird holds title of ‘Queen’s Award winner’ for a five-year period, Coda assisted incorporating the marque into key marketing touchpoints to maximise visibility internally to and externally.
